Summary on Grant Application Form
Caries (tooth decay) is the most common human disease, and there is currently no sensitive or accurate means for detecting it in its early stages, when tissue damage can be minimized or even reversed. The inadequacies of existing clinical tools are compounded by the fact that some dentists do not regularly assess patients with x-rays owing to fears associated with exposure to ionizing radiation. These fears are even more acute when assessing children. The aim of this LINK proposal is to develop a new, compact, high effeciency imaging system for non-invasive dental diagnosis. Our system makes use of high power, all-optical pulsed sources of coherent terahertz (THz 10 12 Hz)radiation, recently developed in Cambridge. Terahertz imaging offers a non-ionising alternative to x-rays and additionally provides higher contrast in clinical diagnosis. The technology is inherently novel and adapts the latest ideas emerging from academic research. The proposal forges a new collaboration between the Cavendish Laboratory and Toshiba Research Europe Ltd (Cambridge), who will jointly develop the imaging system, and the Centre for Dental Innovations at the University of Dundee, who will be the clinical end-users for the product.
