Summary on Grant Application Form
Two recent and independent sets of mathematical developments will be combined in an effort to devise an efficient computational method for calculating the sintering of an initial array of disconnecting circular particles, of different sizes and of different connectivities. It has recently been shown by the principal investigator that a viscous sintering model preserves quadrature domains under evolution. This implies that the evolution is governed by a finite system of coupled nonlinear differential equations for the quadrature data whose terms depend on non-local global quantities which must be found at each instant from the solution of a biharmonic boundary value problem. This boundary value problem will be solved at each instant using a new fast muttipole method (FMM). Given the updated quadrature data, new methods to reconstruct the quadrature domain will be devised in order to track the evolution of the sinter body.A catalogue of cases will be studied using the new method and the value of various unit problems explicitly studied.
