Summary on Grant Application Form
in our previous work studying high spin isobaric analogue states (IAS) we have established a remarkable connection between two fundamental nuclear phenomena hitherto thought to be unrelated - the energy shift of excited states due to the Coulomb force and the rotational alignment of nucleons along the rotational axis of nucleus. As a result, we have now gained a quantitative understanding of Coulomb effects and shown that measurement of Coulomb energies can yield highly detailed nuclear structure information. This work has prompted development of nuclear models and resulted in a number of predictions that can now be tested. In the current proposal we will undertake an investigagtion of [AS in nuclei around the N=Z line at the highest possible spins and for the largest possible values of isospin. For T=1/2 odd-A mirror nuclei, we will map out the high-spin [AS in the f7/2 shell and attempt to identify for the first time excited states in mirror nuclei above the doubly-magic nucleus 56NI. The resulting Coulomb energies will be used to enable a quantitative analysis of the evolution of nuclear structure effects as a function of spin. By studying complete sets of T=1 isobaric triplets, the measured Coulomb energies can be used to yield crucial information on the influence of T=1 np-pairing as a function of energy and spin. We will attempt to identify and compare, for the first time, sets of high spin IAS of T=3/2. By populating the highest accessible spins of N=Z even-even nuclei,,we will search for signatures of T=0 np-pairing - in particular for evidence of the predicted exotic T=0 paired phase at very high spins.
