The research aims to establish a new biasing technique for MOS transistorswhich is based on fixing the voltage between the gate of the transistor and the bulk silicon substrate. Using the new technique it is easyto define the region of operation of the transistor and is, therefore, particularly relevant to weak inversion modes. These intrinsicallylow-power dissipation modes of operation find application in devices that need to operate for long periods from small non-rechargeablebatteries. Additionally, exponential nonlinearly characteristics are displayed which can provide useful computational primitives. Theobjectives of the research are, therefore, to design (and have fabricated through Europractice) primitive analogue cells based on thenew technique. In particular cells for generating log and anti-log functions (which will be configurable to allow mathematicaloperations to be performed) will be fabricated.
