Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme seeks to develop a transannular ring contraction strategy triggered by the addition of an aryl radical to an arene. Once demonstrated the reaction will be-applied in the synthesis of some biaryl containing macrocyclic natural products. Two classes will be targeted - the alnusones, which have a meta-bridged biphenyl constrained within a thirteen membered carbocycle - and the macrocyclic bis(benzyls), which contain four oxygenated arenes within a strained macrocyclic core.
