Summary on Grant Application Form
We are developing Ontological Sketch Modelling (OSM) as an approach to usability evaluation that focuses on structures rather than tasks, and assesses the goodness of fit between the user's conceptualisation of a system and that actually implemented by the designer. OSM provides a common representation that supports reasoning about users, domains and devices. Work to date has focused on development and testing of a preliminary evaluation method, and of a prototype tool that analyses a system for'viscosity' (one of Green's Cognitive Dimensions). Results of the work to date have been encouraging. The proposal is to extend this work by testing the approach further, and developing and testing tools and techniques that can be applied within design practice, with the long term aim that such tools should be accessible (e.g. Web-based), useful (delivering valid results) and usable (easy to learn and apply). The focus of the work will be on the design of medical information systems. A library of worked examples will be developed, both as examples to support learning and as models for re-use. In addition, formal definitions of many misfits, including more cognitive dimensions, will be developed. An prototype OSM tool will be developed and tested.
