The proposed research is divided into the following tasks: initial probe design, probe analysis, fabrication and assembly, software development, prok calibration, and application in the Cranfield icing wind research tunnel (CIRT). The expected overall performance of the probe will initially be defined terms of the range of tunnel velocity, temperature, droplet sizes and LWC. Conceptually, it is similar to a total pressure probe except it also measure the mass flux. An analysis of the catch efficiency of the probe and the effects due to wall proximity and leading edge shape will be assessed using FLUENT and an in-house trajectory code. Running in parallel with the CFD is the fabrication of the probe leading edge, main probe body, heating, purge, measurement and traverse systems. The probe's operability and performance will be assessed in a wind tunnel at ambient conditions using mono- and poly-dispersed droplets. The probe performance under icing condition will be carried out at Cranfield icing tunnel where a proposed series tests will determine the probe accuracy. Comparison will be made with the conventional icing blade for the small droplets and the overall liquid water content.
