Summary on Grant Application Form
Previous work by the author has demonstrated that microwave treatments can have a significant influence on the processing of minerals and ores. This wa has so far been carried out using relatively inefficient mufti-mode cavities. This project wilt quantify the influence of single mode, high electric field strength microwaves on the comminution of ores. This type of applicator will significantly increase the heating rate of the individual minerals within the ores thus reducing the overall exposure time and energy input. The deliverables for the project will be as follows. 1. Development of the data base of dielectric propert for important minerals. 2. Quantification of the influence of microwave radiation on specific comminution energy for ores. 3. Whodology for the design of flaNSheets for reduced comminution casts. 4. Quantification of the influence of mineral texture on microwave assisted comminution. 5. Preparation of journ piers, a web site and industrial dissemination meetings to increase awareness of microwave technologies across different industries. The rationale for the study is based around the need for energy reduction in comminution processes whilst increasing recovery of valuable minerals. This would increase the coifrvness of important UK industries and uftimatly lead to the conservation of global resources, therefore, improving quality of life.
