Summary on Grant Application Form
This work aims to research the role which future generations of silicon architectures can have for challenging real-time control applications. Specifically, it focuses on devices that incorporate a general-purpose microprocessor core, plus uncommitted FPGA circuitry to support application specific processing. This work brings together acknowledged and proven expertise in Hardware and Software for real-time control together with industrial support from two of the world-leading vendors of advanced FPGA chips and systems. Our supporters include Gatefield Corp in the USA, and the applications development unit Infineon (the microelectronics spin-off of Siemens) to provide design tools and an awareness of the industrial context. The outcome of this work will be methods, tools and processes for applying such technologies to control, as well two demonstrator applications from the domains of aerospace and ground transport.
