Following neurological damage, many patients are left with some degree of movement disability. Rehabilitation is defined to minimise these effects and hence improve the patient's quality of life, but the effectiveness of these modalities are often not assessed and usually subjective. It is recognised that a well defined assessment strategy is required to evaluate walking, but only if it provides information on specific functional aspects. This work aims to characterise gait abnormalities from analysis of the electrical activity in muscles as measured from the skin surface, the surface electromyogram or sEMG. Hardware and software instrumentation, appropriate for use by clinicians in hospitals, will be designed and implemented to record the sEMG, synchronised to data from movement sensors and video. The sEMG will be analysed and measures identified to describe specific gait patterns. These measures will be tested for reliability and repeatability to improve interpretation and facilitate comparisons across time and individuals. Results will enhance our understanding of muscle activity during walking. The sEMG measures may be used in classifying patients accoring to gait abnormalities and assist in the prescription of rehabilitation modalities.
