The proposed research aims to provide a new type of low cost diagnostic device for bone fractures and abnormalities. The device is thought of as an alternative to the higher risk, expensive irradiative techniques, and could be used for the case of spinal defects and closed bone fractures, especially in young children and babies. The device is based on the detection of ultrasonic-induced vibrations passing through the bone using a two-wavelength source coupled with an optical detector. An ultrasonic wave, generated by an external source, passing through a bone creates a vibration pattern of the bone. This pattern is measured using optical sensors and reconstructed digitally. Any change in phase or wavelength is related to abnormalities or interfaces between bone and soft tissue, which can be detected and localised.The total duration of the project is estimated at two years. Help is requested for part of this period from a postdoctoral research assistant and a technician.
