Summary on Grant Application Form
Although conventional electronics can be considered to be highly reliable under normal operating conditions, reliability deteriorates rapidly under harsh environments such as high temperatures, thermal cycles, ionising radiation, and corrosive atmospheres. It is necessary to use alternatives to silicon based electronics and currently SIC is the best contender material, followed by GaN. The advancement of electronics technologies for extreme environments requires input from a wide range of expertise, techniques and equipment resources which are distributed over a number of universities and commercial organisations in the UK and it is believed that UK RTD in this field is best assisted by synergistic pooling of these resources.A new Network, E3NET will be set up to provide an infrastructure to enable this. E3NET will assist R&D efforts in the area Electronics for Extreme Environments by co-ordinating research activities in both academia and industry, bringing into focus UK academic research on SIC and related technologies, and providing industry and academia with a one-stop-shop for access to the appropriate expertise in the academic community.Additionally, bringing together this nationally distributed expertise will encourage new research initiatives that will place the UK at the forefront of this field and hence attract more inward investment.
