Summary on Grant Application Form
Self-Organised Criticality (SOC) has been proposed as a general dynamical principle behind the complex behaviour of many phenomena observed in nature (e.g. earthquakes, biological evolution, epidemics, etc.) The proposed research will investigate SOC in non-conservative model systems, that is systems whose local dynamics have no apparent conservation law. More specifically, the research program will focus on two key issues in these systems: robustness and predictability.Robustness refers to the capability of a model to maintain its behaviour under physically motivated generalizations (e.g. introduction of disorder). Predictability relates uncertainty in the specification of the current state of the system to uncertainty in a future state. A conventional view is that the absence of predictability is related to chaotic dynamics. These two problems will be investigated by studying non-conservative deterministic models of SOC using large scale numerical simulations, as well phenomenological theories of critical behaviour.
