Recently, we deveolped a convenient mulit-step high-yield synthesis for the first [1]borametallocenophanes of group IV transistion metals with boron in co-ordination number three. This synthesis is not restricted to boron-bridged bis(cyclopentadienyl) complexes but also provides access to corresponding indenyl, fluorenyl and mixed ligand derivatives of Ti, Zr and Hf. Metallocenophanes of group IV element are of particular interest due to their remarkable qualities as highly active Ziegler-Natta-type catalysts for the polymerisation of olefins. It is well known that such catalytic processes can be accelerated by a bridging Lewis-acidic centre. Hence, our [1]borametallocenophanes showing an electron withdrawing three co-ordinate boron centre in the bridge should be well suited as catalysts for such purposes. The present proposal mainly aims at investigations of the expected catalytic properties. In the first stage of the project the parent bis(cylopentadienyl) complexes and related compounds with indenyl and fluorenyl ligands will be tested as catalysts for the homogeneous polymerisation of ethene and propene under standard laboratory conditions and efforts will be made to optimise their activities. In the second stage suitable substituents shall be introduced to the aromatic ligands thus allowing for investigation of the structure-reactivity correlation and thus the design of catalyst for the generation of tailor-made polymers.
