Carbonyls are key intermediates for the autocatalytic production of OH, and also play an important role in condensed phase atmospheric chemistry. Current techniques for carbonyls are not sufficiently fast or selective to provide the quality of data demanded by models and on atmospheric platforms such as aircre This proposal aims to couple two methodologies, that of the proton-transfer-reactor (PTR) and time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF MS), to provide a new sensitive (pptv level), selective and fast response technique (a PTR-TOF) for on-line detection of a wide range of carbonyl compounds. Carbonyls will uncle charge transfer with high concentrations of protonated water or alcohols in a flow drift tube with optimised ionisation efficiency, and the cationic products will detected by TOF MS. Modulation of protonating agents will allow distinction between isobaric carbonyls. We also propose to test the feasibility of the PTRTOFfor atmospheric measurements of organic peroxy radicals as their parent anions.
