This proposal builds on our recent achievements in synthesising some of the first redox-active cross-conjugated oligoenes. The proposed work will represent the first systematic study of these novel highly-conjugated systems which form stabilised cross-conjugated radicals, the properties of which are virtually unexplored. Emphasis will focus on iterative synthetic procedures to afford a family of compounds in which electrochemical and photochemical generation of charge carriers can be achieved. Their electronic, structural and optical properties will be thoroughly explored. It is anticipated that these delocalised radicals will display optoelectronic properties not observed in their linearly-conjugated counterparts. These results will be of fundamental importance in our understanding of cross-conjugation in alkenes.We aim to test experimentally for the first time theories that cross-conjugated radicals could function as prototype soliton switches. ON / OFF switching of an optical read-out might be modulated by the passage of charge through the cross-conjugated system under electrochemical control. If successful, this aspect of the project could be relevant to the development of new optoelectronic devices.
