Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed network brings together groups in the UK having a common goal inpursuing the deep connections between mathematics and physics -- primarily algebraic geometry, singularity theory, twistor theory, operator algebras, non-commutative geometry, K-theory, cyclic homology, quantum groups, Hopf algebras, cellular algebras from mathematics and boundary conformal field theory, renormalisation theories, instantons, string theory, D-branes, quantum Hall effect from physics.Although there are many direct links between some of these topics many havehitherto appeared unrelated. Nevertheless their study leads to common structures so that progress in one area catapults progress in another. There are clearly deep mechanisms underlying these connection and digging these out will lead to substantial progress across a wide spectum of mathematics and theoretical physics.
