A novel and exciting approach for the manufacture of silver ingots from lead bullion is presented. The materials processing industry is now subjected tc ever-stronger international competition and growing environmental legislation. These pressures are forcing this industry to continually look at its curren manufacturing processes and investigate new ones that will satisfy environmental concerns and cut costs.Currently, the removal of silver from lead bullion is achieved using a process that has been in place for decades. The disadvantage of this process is it; low level of efficiency and high costs in terms of energy, labour, contamination, and maintenance. This proposal outlines a new process that will radically reduce these costs and satisfy environmental concerns. Two leading universities in the field are combining their complementary expertise it computational modelling (Greenwich), manufacturing and materials engineering (Cambridge) to investigate the influence of manufacturing parameters or the subsequent performance of this novel process. This multidisciplinary research programme will be complimented with industrial expertise from the lead industrial partner, Britannia Refined Metals, who will have a major involvement in the planning, operation and dissemination of the research.
