Summary on Grant Application Form
This multi project research equipment proposal requests support for a non contacting white light interferometer for three dimensional analysis of surface properties in the nanometre size range. The equipment will be used in a portfolio of twenty projects in the fields of Tribology 8 Fluid Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering. The six academics in the two groups currently have EPSRC research funding of 2.5 million and total research funding of 5 million, which supports over 20 postdoctoral research fellows and over 50 postgraduate research students. The equipment will provide 3D surface characterisation of engineering components, surfaces and materials at the nanoscale, to allow functional analysis of both tribological and surface engineered interfaces in both engineering and bioengineering systems. The equipment allows surface interrogation at the nanoscale in the noncontacting mode of large 'engineering component scale' specimens. This is critical for intra-experimental observations of specimens from laboratory functional simulators and pilot processes for surface coatings.
