Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is the quantitative study of the emission spectra from plasmas subject to high field modification at laser irradiances up toi o^21 W/cm2. The response of an atom or ion to a strong field electric at a laser focus will be directly determined through the appearance of laser satellites and the measurement of these satellites with high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. There exists a strong international and UK theoretical programme in atomic physics with intense lasers, however, at higher intensities there is a fundamental lack of knowledge, which can be addressed by experiment. The parameter regime accessible using the VULCAN laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is extreme, and unique, and mostly unexplored. A programme of work to investigate the response of atoms and highly ionised ions to strong single frequency electric fields is outlined. This proposal brings together expertise to develop a strong-field atomic physics laser-laboratory.
