Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) has been used in rehabilitation for therapy, function restoration, and maintenance of vital function. Some FES systems have reached clinical maturity while other areas are under development. This proposal brings together university, clinical and industrial centres which have demonstrated international leadership in FES development. The network will focus on: Function restoration and therapy via FES for people with a range of neurological deficits including spinal-cord injury (SCI), stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), and cerebral palsy (CP); FES for maintentance of vital function (e.g. cardiac assist, respiration); microelectronic neuroprosthetic systems.FES research is, being conducted both at academic institutions and in hospital centres, but the thrust of this work lacks definitive coordination and there is a need for better interfaces between the groups. There also appears to be a lack of industrial input on issues such as technical standards and formal requirements. There is therefore a shortfall in technology transfer into clinical use.The network will coordinate a range of interaction, research, and transfer activities which will: facilitate the flow of knowledge and people between the university, clinical and industrial partners; stimulate the formation of new inter-disciplinary research collaborations; promote clinical evaluation of new technology, and encourage clinical uptake; pursue technology
