Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to develop heuristic principles to help fluid power systems designers reason about intrinsic safety. Our purpose in particular is to exploit past experience more systematically in an attempt to avoid hazards that arise when the physical and human environment in which systems are operated differs from that assumed during the design process. The programme of work includes 1) the development of causal analyses and inductive categorisations of a large case base of failures, 2) the inference of intrinsic safety principles, 3) the development of a tutoring package that employs several mechanisms to modify designers' mental models of failure and hazard, and 4) the evaluation of how effective this package is in accomplishing this modification. It is intended that not only will this approach help make systems with high power density safer, but that it will also help designers respond to increasingly demanding safety legislation.
