The purpose of this investigation is to undertake combined sounding and direction finding measurements over several paths for a prolonged period (12 months) and for the associated data analysis effort. The analysis will be directed towards developing our understanding of the complex propagation mechanisms prevalent in Northern Europe and applying this to the development of physically realistic models of the channel behaviour which incorporate directional information. In addition, the applicability of intelligent, adaptive beam/null steering techniques to reduce the apparent delay and Doppler spreads at a modem input will be investigated. This aspect of the investigation has significant potential in increasing the available data throughput in a digital communications system under the distributed propagation environment encountered at northerly latitudes.
