Summary on Grant Application Form
Turbulence models, especially for unsteady flows, still remain the Achilles heal of CFD. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) presents a potentially better, but computationally expensive, alternative. Spalart of Boeing, at an invited lecture, proposed a new more economical and hence feasible zonal LES approach. He tentatively demonstrated this to give improvements for one relatively high Reynolds number separated flow simulation. However, Spalart stated the accuracy of the novel, timely, technique needs to be considered further; especially for flows without separation. This is the theme of the present Overseas Travel Grant application (OTG). It is hoped to visit Professor Lars Davidson's CFD group at Chalmers University Sweden. This group has significant LES modelling experience and have recently extended this to zonal LES. It is hoped to acquire expertise in both these areas; especially the=latter.Key aspects are learning details of how differing turbulence models are matched at the zonal LES interface and how critical the selection of the matching position is to the solution's success. Spalart's work implies that away from the LES region the flow is treated as steady. For certain cases this does not seem reasonable and so it is hoped to gain insights into this matter. There is much zonal LES experience to be gained that is only available in the Chalmers group. It is hoped to take advantage of this through the present OTG and that the award will lead to long-term collaboration.
