Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary aim of this proposal is to design, assemble and evaluate the instrumentation and analysis procedures to conduct simultaneous thermal and spectral analysis of polymeric materials on the same test specimen. In other words, the same test specimen will yield information on the enthalpy of a specified reaction, the glass transition temperature, thermal expansion and presence or absence of specified chemical functional groups. The option for conducting simultaneous thermal, spectral and dielectric analysis will not be addressed in this current programme but it will be considered as a further development upon the completion of this current research programme. A unique feature of this current proposal is that the FTIR spectrometer will be used to conduct the spectral analysis within the DSC chamber and to compute the dimensional changes brought about in the specimen as a function of temperature (within the DSC chamber). The spectral and thermal expansion measurements will be carried out using a custom-designed non-contact optical probe.
