The goal of this project is to develop a novel instrument/apparatus that can track the trajectories of particles in an opaque moving particulate solid medium, and to use them to determine the time-dependent flow pattern and velocity field during silo discharge. By simultaneously tracking several tracer particles during a single solids flow event, the complete velocity field and its temporal variations should be obtainable for the first time in a ves of pilot scale dimensions. The project is novel: it will be the first time that radar has been used to track the movement of particles within a flowing so This proposal exploits the newly developed narrow band FM modulation technique in harmonic radar to overcome the difficulties of simultaneous penetration, discrimination and multiple target identification that are unachievable with simple ground-penetrating radar.The instrument will be composed of items of established technology, integrated into a completely new assembly and applied to a class of problems t which they have never been previously applied. The instrument will be initially used for silo flow experiments, but it has the potential to be applied to much wider range of problems involving the flow of granular solids (fluidised beds, mixers, pneumatic conveying, chute flow, etc.).
