Summary on Grant Application Form
We plan to build a new pressure cell for X-ray crystallography followed by a program of X-ray diffraction studies on a variety of molecular systems under 'mild' pressure and a range of temperatures. The design of the small gas pressure cell is novel and we request funds to develop the 1 s` prototype, prove the function and wide utility thereof and to create a facility which enables variable pressure diffraction experiments in a relatively 'routine' manner The project is unique, ambitious and challenging, but achievable in the proposed time frame of the project. There are so many unanswered questions about the effects of pressure on very basic chemical systems and we believe that the creation of a simple to operate, transportable and relatively inexpensive device, will open up new avenues of structural chemistry to further investigations and exciting results. The proposed project is highly cost effective given that the device is designed to fit on standard mounts for existing laboratory type X-ray diffraction equipment, the material costs are low [after our initial R&D] and the manpower requested is a standard PDRA with some technicians' time. We also request facilities time for collaborative work at ISIS and testing the cell at station 9.8 at the Synchrotron source at Daresbury.
