The present proposal is directed at meeting a number of fundamental technical challenges inherent in developing a semiconductor quantum computer. The most fundamental requirement for a quantum computer is the quantum bit (qubit) the direct equivalant of a bit in classical computing. A qubit is a superposition of two quantum states of a system. The computer architecture to be investigated here is based on using semiconductor quantum dots to fashion qubits. Because a superposition must have definite well-controlled phases between all the branches, any sources of error or decoherence must be strictly held in check. The project work will be directed at showing that decoherence in quantum dots can be maintained within a margin of error which permits the use of quantum error correcting codes to ensure fault tolerant computing can be accomplished. The design work will also specify performance characteristics of THz probes and detectors which would be used to address the qunatum dot computer processor and to allow implementation of a quantum computer data bus. Experimental demonstrations of THz sources and detectors will be undertaken.
