Quantum entanglement plays a key role in a recent development of quantum information studies. It is generally believed that quantum information theory may give an important breakthroughs for information processing. In quantum computation, two qubits are entangled by an operation of a controlled-phase gate, a combination of which provide any computation required. Entangled pairs of photons may provide the most secured and advanced quantum cryptography. One of the striking consequences of quantum entanglement is the existence of the communication procedure called quantum teleportation. We are interested in studies of quantum entanglement and its application to communication. Quantum communication using a pure state and a pure quantum channel has been widely studied. However, for realistic conditions, the quantum entanglement and signal states are in mixed states. We want to investigate how to optimise the quantum communication through the imperfect and mixed quantum channels to consider realistic conditions. Quantum measurement theory, including the positive-operator valued measurement, will be studied for this purpose. For fundamental interest, we will work on quantisation of entanglement for various physical systems including continuous variables which will provide a deeper understanding of the role of entanglement in the quantum communication process.
