Summary on Grant Application Form
My group in Bristol were the first to develop monodisperse, surfactant-free emulsion systems. We now wish to extend our work in this area in the following directions. Firstly, to test for the first time the theoretical framework for the hydrodynamic and coalescence properties of liquid droplets, both in the absence of any interfacial adsorbed layer (e.g. of surfactant or polymer), and upon the addition of such layers, continuously up to full monolayer coverage. Secondly, by introducing varying amounts of cross-linking monomer in the droplet synthesis, we will be able to investigate how the structure of the dispersed phase (liquid to gel to solid) affects their hydrodynamic and coagulation/coalescence properties. We also wish to test the theories of Ostwald ripening using mixtures of droplets, in which one set is pre-swollen with an organic species. Finally, in order to interpret the results obtained, we wish to carry out complementary thin film studies.
