Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks funding for a studentship to initiate a detailed study of the synthesis, structure and properties of a number of condensed phosphate phases, in particular those containing the triphosphate anion, P3010. Such phases have remained relatively poorly understood, with little structural information available, despite their being no chemical or physical barrier to their application in areas of current scientific interest. The most significant hindrance to their development can be ascribed to the lack of detailed structural information available. Therefore, with the recent advances in structural characterisation techniques and our expertise in this area, it appears highly timely to investigate such phases to attempt to understand their structureproperty relationship with a view to developing them for future applications. This structural characterisation will be achieved using powder diffraction techniques, coupled to solid state NMR studies and high resolution electron microscopy. Initial focus of research will be centred on layered triphosphate phases of the type MH2P3010.xH20 (M = Ga, AI, Cr, Mn, Fe) which are reported to display interesting ion exchange and intercalation properties and may have potential as ionic conductors. A second component of the project will concentrate on magnetic properties of condensed phosphates, particularly as a means of studying magnetic exchange interactions in dilute magnetic environments.
