Nonlinear optical spectroscopies such as second harmonic (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) will be exploited in studying the formation and properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of biphenyl-based thiols in situ in an electrochemically controlled environment. Correlating electrochemical with spectroscopic data a description of the electrochemical behavior of the SAMS on the molecular level is the aim of the project. Using the potential as a preparation parameter its influence on the formation and quality of the layers will be investigated.An SHG and SFG spectrometer will be set up which is continuously tuneable from 450 nm to 10 um and which will allow to study phenomena of interfaces between condensed media. Different types of thiols such as monothiols and dithiols will be investigated to explore the range of possibilities to affect the charge transfer properties of SAMS of biphenyl thiols.An understanding of the processes on a molecular level will improve the knowledge of the relationship between the electrochemical properties of the SAM and the molecular structure, the substrate, and the environment. It will, therefore, contribute to an optimization of these layers for applications as electrode modifiers both in electrochemistry and electronics.
