Summary on Grant Application Form
Free space optical interconnects (FSOI) offer dense and scalable high bandwidth information channels within electronic systems such as high performance computers and telecomunications equipment. The key issue in their widespread use is integration with electronic construction and design techniques. This programme aims to investigate and develop novel integration techniques, involving adaptive optics, to enable low cost and alignment tolerant optoelectronic interconnects under'real world' influences such as thermal variations, vibration, device tolerances and drift.Liquid crystal spatial light modulators (now often referred to as microdisplays) can be used to write programmable optical elements that can be used for focussing and beamsteering Depending on the device complexity, simple beamsteering or full reconfigurability can be implemented. The programme will investigate the scaleability and performance of these interconnects by simulation and construction of a link test-bed that will be subjected to typical environmental disturbances. The potential to use low cost partially coherent sources with holograms will also be investigated.
