The provision of increased bandwidth for the end-user will assume increasing importance in the medium term. In this context, xDSL, and in particular the 51.84 Mb/s capacity variant VDSL, have a significant role to play. However, the current solution for interfacing VDSL with the broadband optical access node presently requires complex SMT-1 SDH and VDSL modem equipment to be present at the distribution point (DP); a maximum distance of only 300m from the customer premises. In this project, we propose to investigate the use of simple, comparatively low cost and power tri-band GSM radio-technology and VCSEL's for bandpass conversion of VDSL signals onto an optical carrier at the DP. The associated high-power VDSL modem and SDH equipment can then again be situated within the local exchange. We intend to determine whether the line compensation techniques used in VDSL modems can also include impairments present in both optoelectronic and radio components. This would enable a low-cost access key to be produced, thus promoting the penetration of broadband services. Radio technology investigation will be carried out at Cambridge University, whilst the copper cable and VCSEL evaluation will be performed at Essex University. Final demonstrations will take place at the Essex University.
