Summary on Grant Application Form |
Some communication infrastructures, such as ad-hoc networks, the amorphous computer, or meshed networks (a technology commercialised by our industrial collaborator) are very dynamic and therefore may hamper the deployment of new network services. Our vision for this project is to regard network nodes as software agents and to investigate multi-agent interactions in order to provide network services. We will consider services such as diagnostic, mobile handset tracking and resource allocation. Two different agent approaches will be used to deploy services: cooperation according to which a group of agents choose to work together to achieve a common goal, and market-based competition where agents act as self-interested entities competing on a market. None of these approaches is a priori more adapted to deploy new network services; our investigation will gain better insights in interaction mechanisms and will produce guidelines for designers of services. Patterns of interactions will be derived, and their performance will be evaluated through simulation. Patterns usefulness will also be evaluated by using them to set up further services such as conference calls.
