Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research project will use the RAMS airspace model and existing databases of aircraft engine emissions to develop the capability to model the temporal and spatial output of aircraft emissions. This will then be utilized to examine potential changes in the climate system from these emissions and from contrail formation. This will be done using an Intermediate General Circulation Model to assess the climate change impacts. We anticipate developing and testing several possible aviation demand growth scenarios. This will include analyzing the impact on emissions of different fleet characteristics, such as larger or smaller aircraft; changes in the management of the airspace system, either by more direct routing, changes in altitude or an explicit effort to minimize environmental impact. Overall results should be of interest to policy makers in evaluating future policy in both the aviation sector and other transport sectors which can provide an alternative to future growth in aviation. .
