The research is focused on the assessment of technological feasibility of a comprehensive and accurate traffic and travel information system that promotes both urban sustainability and social inclusion. It is widely accepted that, on one hand, the distributed nature of traffic/travel information sources implies distributed computer architecture of the information system and, on the other hand, the need to provide access to information by the widest possible group of users implies the use of mobile telephone network as a universal communication media. However, while in principle Internet communication can be used for linking the sources of information and the GSM telephones can be used for information dissemination, it is not clear what level of performance and responsiveness is attainable with such distributed computing and communications system. The proposed research builds on the extensive experience gained with the real-time traffic information system (DIME) that has been developed at NTU and indeed has been deployed in a UTC environment for the past 4 years.The results of this study will inform future research and development work on advanced traffic/travel telematics systems by offering a set of recommendations regarding computing and telecommunications infrastructure of such systems. The development and evaluation of a GSM-based prototype of the public access system to traffic/travel information will contribute to the promotion of social inclusion as well as basing of value in the context of a broad range of telematics applications.
