A research team of materials scientists and mechanical engineers, working closely with materials suppliers and users in the casting industry will undertake research aimed at the enhancement of properties of cast engineering components by combined experimental work, relating defect structure to process conditions, fatigue and fracture behaviour, modelling and simulation which will provide the insight and information required for standards to be set by end users on acceptable defect levels to achieve design goal mechanical properties. Specifically castings with controlled arrays of defects (pores, oxide films, inclusions Fe rich intermetallics)will be produced, microstructurally characterised and fatigue/fracture properties related to the defect structure, including in the analysis defect interactions. A novel ACPD test method will be employed and further developed to monitor defects and early stages of crack growth. From this work a phenomenological model for the formation and effects of defects (including their interaction) will be set up which can then be coupled into castings simulations to assist cast shops design casting moulds and procedures to meet service requirements.
