The research programme is to investigate the use of 2.46GHz microwaves to preheat nitrogen gas/coating powders when using a high velcity spray technique. The heating technique will be by a combination of dielectric and plasma heating. By using a long path interaction, the thermal efficiency of the process will be high (50%) due to the long contact time spent by the gas and powder within the heat exchanger. The thermal efficiency of the present commercial do plasma heated device is low and in the order of 5% and is dependent on the argon gas/velocity because of the fixed and small size of the heat zone. A series of controlled coating tests will be undertaken using both metal and ceramic powders on a variety of substrates. The surface properies of the coatings will be measured and compared with those obtained when using both plasma spraying and HVOF spraying which are the two most popular techniques used by industry. The project has large commercial implications as the UK market alone for thermal spraying is in the order of 800M and that spraying in general represents 0.33% of the GDP
