Summary on Grant Application Form
Discontinuities and, more in general, sudden and rapid changes in the laws describing the dynamics of a system affect many systems in different fields: mechanics, biology, economics, etc.Usually the exact analytical solutions of the equations of motion of this type of systems are not available, however theoretical and analytical methods may provide useful information on their global dynamic behaviour.Often numerical integration seems to be the most suitable tool to solve, at least partially, these problems and thus forecast the dynamic behaviour of non-smooth systems. Nonetheless the numerical solution of a non-smooth problem presents some specific difficulties that are not present in the numerical solution of smooth problems. Some of them are the determination of the non-smoothness points; the choice between many almost simultaneous non-smoothness points, the presence of non-smooth bifurcations etc. Finally the present proposal aims at extending the computational techniques developed for small dynamical systems to the finite element discretisation of more complex engineering problems.
