A recent DETR PIT project on Managing Geotechnical Risk has concluded that, given the rapidly-changing procurement patterns in post-Egan construction, there is an urgent need to develop risk-based ground-related (termed geotechnical ) design systems, procedure and techniques. Without this, construction will become even more exposed to ground-related risk in the future, as a result of the adoption of different and more varied conditions of contract, the spread of new types of client/constructor relationships, and the need significantly to increase the speed and reduce the cost of construction. In the proposed research, a critical study of geotechnical design practice will identify current systems, procedures, techniques, and environmental constraints, and will determine the link between these and uncertainty of outcome. Current best practice will be noted and described, and those circumstances and procedures that expose clients to high levels of geotechnical risk will be identified. It is expected that the weakness of analytical, traditional deterministic design strategies will be highlighted in the context of the changing construction environment in which geotechnical design is carried out. Without this, construction will become even more exposed to ground-related risk in the future.
