Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will develop novel systems for arm cranking excersize in C4-C6 tetraplegia, assisted by functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the paralysed upper arm muscles. This will provide a new modality for excersize and therapy offering potential improvements in the quality of the upper limbs, in the execution of several important daily activities, and in general fitness and health. Methods will be developed for system characterisation and stimulation control, and apparatus constructed for FES-assisted arm crank ergometry and wheelchair propulsion. The systems will be experimentally evaluated with three C4-C6 tetraplegic patients at the scottish national spinal injuries unit.
