A quincunx-structured predictive coding scheme -- Binary Tree Predictive Coding (BTPC) -- has shown itself ideal for general purpose image compression. It achieves good compression and efficiency performance whether the image to be coded is photographic, medical, graphical or textual, in contrast to most coding schemes that excel for a particular image type but are suboptimal when applied to other types. In contrast to the vigorous research that has been devoted to block-oriented and subband transform coding, quincunx-structured predictive schemes have received relatively little attention, raising the possibility that the results achieved with BTPC can be substantially improved by a systematic research project into its strengths and deficiencies, the incorporation of more sophisticated context modelling and compression strategies, and the inclusion of a quincunx-structured biorthogonal wavelet coding mode. The application of the structure to video coding has also shown encouraging results, opening up a complementary field of activity. This research project will therefore investigate the limits of performance for quincunx-based structures applied to image and video compression, with the goal of realizing practical designs that are competitive with the state-of-the-art in the different modes (e.g. lossless or lossy) and contexts (e.g. medical images, photographic images, video) that image coding is used.
