Summary on Grant Application Form
Breaking waves have been blamed for damaging many coastal structures, in part because of the propagation of impact pressures into water filled cracks. This interactive programme of field, model and theoretical investigations aims to increase understanding of the problem. Full scale wave pressure and aeration data will be collected at an exposed site on Admiralty Breakwater, Alderney. A total of 42 transducers will be used, including two artificial instrumented cracks. Similar measurements obtained from a laboratory wave channel using both fresh water and seawater so that effects resulting from the tendency for entrained air to persist in sea water can be assessed. Further insight into the fundementals of teh various processes will be gained from mathematical model studies which will both entail a large number of innovation features and help to generalize the results. The scale effects present in typical fresh water models will be assessed and the known deficiencies of the Froude and Couchy laws highlighted. Results of the value to practising coastal engineers will be presented and comparisons made with current design methods.
