Summary on Grant Application Form
Materials showing good oxide ion conduction have a number of potential technological applications, e.g. electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells, oxygen sensors and separation membranes. The discovery of new materials with improved oxide ion conduction is therefore an extremely worthwhile aim. This proposal is concerned with a detailed investigation of oxide ion conduction in apatite-type phases, which have recently been reported to show high oxide ion conduction. Apatite oxides have the general formula A10-x(B04)602-y and allow a wide range of substitutional modifications, as demonstrated by our preliminary studies in this area. The project can be divided into four themes. The first is the investigation and optimisation of the oxide ion conduction through doping studies. The second theme concerns structural studies, including high temperature studies, to identify the important structural aspects for high anion conduction. The third theme concerns computer modelling studies, encompassing both defect simulation and molecular dynamics. All of these three themes will be closely linked so that there is a ready flow of information between them. The fourth and final theme concerns the evaluation of the best materials with respect to possible use in technological applications.
