We propose to prepare (by custom synthesis) a range of DNA surfactants based on an amphiphilic molecular architecture consisting of a hydrophobic grou covalently attached to a hydrophilic oligonucleotide. The DNA surfactants will be used to develop methods for the programmed self-assembly of fluid particle including liposomes, oil-in-water emulsion drops and living cells. Both self-assembly of fluid particles and their attachment to solid surfaces using strategies based on complementary DNA strand recognition will be studied. DNA surfactant mediated surface forces in thin liquid films will be quantitatively measured using thin film balance techniques and contact angle measurements for DNA surfactant monolayers with and without surface dilution with conventional surfactants. The effects of DNA mediated interactions on the wetting properties of aqueous solutions on solids will be probed using contact angle measurements and ellipsometry. It is envisaged that new technology based on DNA surfactants for the programmed self-assembly of fluid particles will have biomedical and materials applications.
