Measurement of electrical impedance is a long established technique which is used to probe the surface and internal dielectric properties of cells. Much pioneering work has been done to measure the properties of a suspension containing millions of cells. Electrorotation was developed to measure the properties of single cells, but the technique is tedious and limited. To advance single cell metrology, this project will develop a rapid method for measuring the dielectric properties of single cells. The dielectric properties of a cell depend on a combination of many physiological factors. Using the proposed measurement methoc will allow us for the first time to develop an accurate picture of a cell population. The dielectric properties of cells will be measured across a range of frequencies. The method involves flowing cells through a specially designed micro-impedance system. It is anticipated that up to 1000 cells per second could be processed. The device could be used as a precursor to an automated cell measuring and sorting system.
