Summary on Grant Application Form
Surface chemical patterns of carboxyls and amines will be produced on polymer sheets/silicon wafers by the sequential deposition of plasma polymers through grids fabricated to produce features of > 10 microns. The fidelity of the patterning technique will be evalulated by imaging SIMS and XPS. The application of these patterns to spatially control protein adsorption will be demonstrated using fluorescently-tagged proteins. Patterns will be used to spatially direct cell attachment. The aging of plasma polymers and plasma patterns on exposure to atmosphere, on storage in the laboratory, in various aqueous and organic media and on heating both in vacuo and the laboratory will be evaluated.
