Summary on Grant Application Form
SummaryCoastal protection structures should be maintained at a high level of safety and reliability since, in the event of a significant East Coast flood, the loss to the UK economy could be as high as 6 - 10 billion. The cost associated with maintenance on coastal structures can be very high and this is set to increase with the future anticipated sea level rise and increasing storminess due to global warming. Although risk based assessment of coastal flooding has been studied by a number of researchers focusing on foundation failure and overtopping, the problem of quantitative risk based maintenance of coastal protection structures has not been investigated. As a result, there is still no systematic and rational maintenance strategy for coastal RC structures. This research proposal aims to equip coastal engineers and asset managers (clients) with a rational and process-based tool for the assessment of coastal infrastructure and thereby to provide a more economic asset management scheme than has hitherto been available. By directly relating the risk to the service life of the structure and the cost of maintenance in a quantitative manner, the proposed research represents a significant advance of the subject area.
