Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of this project is to develop an intelligent all-inclusive system that will automate the process of optimisation of automotive structures with structural integrity as the primary objective. Two fundamental problems will be addressed in the early stages of the proposed research: (1) the development of more efficient and accurate data compression techniques (possibly based on wavelet technology) than currently exist for complex loading fatigue assessment; (2) the extension of existing structural optimisation strategies to enable shape, size and topological optimisation to be conducted based on fatigue life prediction. These theories and techniques will then be used to design a software system that will integrate the various islands of technology so as to ensure rapid transfer and intelligent assessment of the large amounts of data typically involved in automotive durability analysis. Finally the power and potential of this integrated system will be demonstrated by conducting case study examples suggested by the collaborating companies. It is expected that, by shifting the focus from validation of structural integrity at the end of the design process to enabling durability assessment and optimisation at the pre-prototype stage, radical design solutions not previously considered will be generated to the benefit of all concerned.
